On April 24th I had the pleasure of talking with Jerry Preator with Take Shape For Life.

Laurie: Tell me a little about your business.

Jerry: I am a life and business coach, and I discovered Take Shape For Life while I was networking. I invested a lot of time, energy, and money getting my certification with the International Coach Federation and I wondered if Take Shape For Life would dilute my other coaching opportunities. Fortunately they synergize each other. Some people want to lose weight, and some people don’t need to lose weight but they want to become more effective in their business. At first I was spending about 10 to 15 hours a week on Take Shape For Life and the rest on Hero’s Journey Consulting. I quickly noticed that it was easier to help people see the benefits of Take Shape For Life, so in the first year I started passively marketing Hero’s Journey Consulting in order to spend the majority of my energy in Take Shape For Life.

Laurie: When did you start the business?

Jerry: I started as a health coach on January 1, 2007.

Laurie: What is the most important thing you want people to know about your business?

Jerry: What sets me apart as a coach is that I never give up on my clients. The majority of my clients either have problems losing weight, run into a wall, or have trouble keeping the weight off. I’ve learned a lot of ways to overcome those problems. I was a drug and alcohol counselor for 13 years, and those people were avoiding jail or just getting out of jail so usually the front door was closed. Working with people now, coaching around health, a lot of times that front door closes part of the way through and they run into that wall. In my prior work as a counselor I found there was always a window open somewhere if I just kept looking long enough. I really became inquisitive and creative about finding a way in. Ultimately weight loss is about calories in, calories out. It really is a simple basic thing and yet almost all of my clients need a coach because losing weight isn’t working for them in some way.

Laurie: What makes your products and services unique?

Jerry: I was impressed with Take Shape For Life from the very beginning. You eat five Medifast meals a day and one Lean & Green meal, which is five to seven ounces of meat and either three cups of salad or a cup and a half of vegetables. It’s called the 5 & 1 Plan. The 5 & 1 Plan is medically formulated, and I’ve noticed that a great benefit of being on this program is that you have more energy. You’re eating six times a day, and there are studies that show that eating six smaller meals as opposed to eating fewer larger meals makes it much easier to maintain or lose weight because you’re not going in and out of starvation mode.

Laurie: What do you perceive as the benefits you receive from Chamber membership?

Jerry: I have met so many wonderful people. I’m not naturally outgoing and when I joined the first chamber I had to coach myself to stay there. I would go in the bathroom about 15 minutes into it, coach myself, and then go back out. Once I got over my fears, we call it monkey mind in my regular coaching, I’d be practically the last one there. I guess there is a natural part of me that is outgoing.

The other thing I get from Chamber membership is being able to pass leads to people and learn what they’re up to, and I’ve built many great relationships. Linda Moholt asked me to help set up Fit City Tualatin and I was the chair for four years. I felt so good about the Chamber early on that I became an Ambassador, which I hadn’t done at any of the other Chambers. Of course I really like that too.

Laurie: Knowing what you know now, what would you do differently in starting a new business?

Jerry: From the very beginning I talked to the warm market, especially family members, but I did it slowly over time so I never really built the momentum. What I would have done differently is to really mind that warm market. I talked to people about how well the program worked for me and my wife. A lot of people were noticing our weight loss so we sent out letters to family members and followed up with them, but I should have done more of that earlier.

Laurie: How do you see your business evolving over the next ten years?

Jerry: After three years as a health coach with Take Shape For Life, Dr. Anderson, our medical director, wrote Dr. A’s Habits of Health. It is research-based and written for anyone to read, and yet it’s so much material that it was difficult to distill down into short talks. A year later a workbook came out and it gave you digestible chunks to read in the book and then had you fill in the workbook. A year later a video series came out with 15-minute vignettes on each one of the lessons. It’s great to have these options for different learning styles, plus it makes the coaching process much more interactive.

I am getting much better at screening people upfront to make sure they’re ready to start on the plan. I make it clear that Take Shape For Life is about lifestyle change. If you aren’t willing to make changes you won’t be successful with what we’re doing because we’re not a diet. We don’t want people to continue on that yo-yo mill, because somewhere around 85% of people who lose weight on a diet gain it back.

Laurie: What are your hobbies?

Jerry: I love to ride my bicycle in the summertime and I love to go out in the RV. Of course I never do anything small; I’ve got a 38-foot diesel pusher! It gets me out in nature though, and even if it’s pouring rain outside the RV has big picture windows all around. You can really enjoy nature from inside! I also love to ski and snowboard.

I love movies. I’ve got surround sound in the motor home and several places in the house, and I’m a sucker for what some people call chick flicks. I love romance; that’s why I picked Valentine’s Day as our wedding date. I thought women in general had to be at least as romantic as I was but I guess I’m pretty high on the scale.

Laurie: How do you recharge?

Jerry: My hobbies are a way for me to recharge. Also I have a clear philosophy of life, and a belief about the goodness of people and the goodness of life. Meditation also makes such a difference. I meditate a couple of times a day. In fact I started transcendental meditation 35 years ago. I can’t say that I’ve done it every single day, but it’s a regular practice for me.

Laurie: Is there anything else you would like to say before we finish?

Jerry: I turned 66 last month and I’m happier and healthier in many ways than I’ve ever been. I just love people and I love what I’m doing. The last third of the Habits of Health book is how to live 35% longer, and I calculated that would put me at 111. I figure I’ll be going strong at 111, still helping people and enjoying life.

Learn more about Take Shape For Life at www.HerosJourney.tsfl.com or call Jerry at 503-799-4317 for more information.
