Tell me about how your business got started.
Steven Quick wasn’t always in the business of helping businesses succeed. In fact, his first venture was a Detail Shop where he serviced car owners of all types, ensuring that their 4-wheeled chariots looked as good as the day they rolled off the assembly line. One day, a Police Officer requested his services for his entire department, however the only way they could provide payment was through a Government issued Credit Card. Because of his ability to pivot and begin accepting these Government cards as payment, Steven was able to contract with 4 additional Police Stations. It was then that Steven was first introduced to the notion of credit card processing as an industry.
Later, as a 9-year employee of Yellow Pages, Steven continued to use his knowledge and experience to assist his listees. Time and time again he would educate these businesses on the value and importance of taking cards as payment and advertising this benefit to increase customer traffic. Then in 2006 Steven took a position with a payment services company in Sarasota, Florida where he quickly rose in the ranks to Regional Manager, overseeing 40+ service representatives.
Although he played the role of a manager well, more and more Steven was missing that personal connection to his clients. So finally, after years of working under the shadow of other businesses, he decided to take his vast knowledge, experience, and passion for helping others to launch his own merchant services company, called SQ Merchant Services. Since that time, Steven has worked tirelessly to serve the business owners of our community, helping them advance and thrive in an ever-changing marketplace with honesty and integrity.

What problem does your product or service solve?
The tagline for SQ Merchant Services is simple: “We help businesses accept credit card and ATM as a form of payment.”
But Steven’s company doesn’t just solve one problem or provide one type of service. No, in fact he has learned over the years that there is so much more that he can offer to his clients by truly caring about the success of their business and offering ways to help streamline their ability to collect revenue.
“Any way that you can accept credit card, I can do.” Steven explains, “If you go to the coffee shop and there’s a Point of Sale, or let’s say you want to send an invoice out on your computer, establish text-message giving as a non-profit, or set up an e-commerce business and need to accept payments, high-risk payment for CBD or cannabis sales, or a mobile swiper for your phone… really, any way you can accept a form of payment – I can do.”

What is your business philosophy?
In an industry where turnover skyrockets and small businesses can easily be lost in the shuffle, Steven draws from his experience on both sides of the trade to provide the most attentive, unparalleled level of service to every client.
“I’m not perfect. The processors I work with are not perfect,” Steven says admittedly about his approach to customer service, “…but if you become a client of mine, I am going to answer that phone.”
As a 2018 Torch Awards for Ethics recipient by the Better Business Bureau, Steven has continually proven himself to be a shinning example of how ISO Agents should operate. When selecting the right agent for your business, Steven advises, “Do your homework. Check the processor, check the person, check the reviews,” he continues, “Go talk to other business owners… ‘Why do you like them?’ ‘Why don’t you like them?” It is then that Steven says you can weigh the options and make the best decision.

How does your business give back to the community?
For the past 6 years, Steven has been an active supporter of My Father’s House, a transitional homeless shelter located in Gresham, OR, raising $700 for the program in the last year. Along with these efforts, Steven has also supported Habitat for Humanity for over 30 years, the JK-25 program, and the Oregon Youth Challenge Program (OYCP) helping struggling high schoolers to successfully graduate.
Steven is also a proud member of the Tualatin and Wilsonville Chambers where he regularly supports and participates in community events for local businesses and families.

If you could say one thing to the people of Tualatin, what would it be?
“I would say two things,” Steven says.
“Keep banding together. We’re all in this together, and it may feel like you’re alone, but you’re really not.” He continues, “If you need to talk to somebody, I’m here. Let’s just band together. It’s going to be ok.”
The second thing is, “Let’s just have coffee. I want to get to know you,” Steven says honestly, “It doesn’t mean that I want to ‘sell you’, because that’s not the way I roll. I want to get to know your business because I’m out all the time, and you’re out all the time, and we work together in harmony. So, let’s just have coffee and get to know each other.”
