Meals on Wheels People Needs Your Help!

Thank you for your continued support and interest in volunteering with Meals on Wheels People during this time.

We have had a tremendous response from our community and have hundreds of volunteers ready to help!

In order to reduce exposure to the virus, we are delivering a week’s worth of meals, milk and bread to homebound clients once a week and conducting daily well-check calls. Because of this change, we have reduced the total amount of volunteers we need each week, which means volunteer positions are filling very quickly after they become available. Please do not get discouraged; as new clients area added to our program and our service model evolves in response to the ever changing landscape of the pandemic, we will have more opportunities for you to help.

We cannot schedule volunteers weeks in advance due to our ever-changing volunteer needs at each site. Emails will be sent out to volunteers with available volunteer positions and you can sign up online for what works best for your schedule.

Here are a few ways you can help in the meantime:

1. Due to the drastic change in its service delivery model, Meals on Wheels People is incurring costs that are unprecedented. Donations are encouraged to allow us to continue to provide food and wellness checks for homebound elderly. Donations can be made here.

2. Spread hope and joy to seniors in our community by creating cards and artwork for us to deliver with a meal. This is a great activity for children, families and people of all ages! Send your card and artwork to: Meals on Wheels People, 7710 SW 31st Ave, Portland OR. 97219. Share videos and pictures of your masterpieces! Post on Facebook or Instagram and tag us using #HopeAtHome #MealsOnWheels #MOWP #FeedingSeniors

3. Join the Friendly Chat program! Volunteers will be assigned about five homebound clients to call once a week to chat, check in and see how they’re doing. Interested? Click here to sign up for a virtual Friendly Chat orientation! Please make sure you are signed in to your volunteer account before registering for the orientation.

4. Donate personal care items. We are putting personal care packages together to deliver to our homebound seniors. We’re looking for sanitizer, disinfecting wipes, paper bags, toothbrushes, toothpaste, pet food, toilet paper, tissue, paper towels, dish soap, sponges, garbage bags, adult incontinence supplies, and coffee/tea. Simply drop off supplies to our central office (M-F, 8AM-2PM, 7710 SW 31st Ave, Portland OR 97219) in bins outside our lower parking level doors. We’ll quarantine items for 3 days and then distribute to seniors in need.

We are amazed at the generosity and support of our community. Thank you all!
